The Mackenzie King Bridge is just a few blocks from Parliament Hill. The bridge runs in an east-west direction with the east end at the Rideau Centre, OC Transpo hub and the Department of National Defence. The west end runs between the National Arts Centre and Confederation Park. This high traffic location presented unique challenges during the 1994-1996 refurbishment project as access to the road and walkways had to remain open at all times. The Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton tendered for the rehabilitation of the Mackenzie King Bridge. RECL was the successful General Contractor. The reconstructive process involved staging during both the demolition and refurbishment phases. Refurbishment included replacing support columns, stairs, lighting and landscaping along the off/on ramps and stairs.
